Who We Are

The Architectural Technologist Association of Nova Scotia (ATANS) is a professional association representing architectural technologists, technicians, intern technologist, and students across the province. Our members play key roles in the design and construction of buildings—whether practicing independently, under the supervision of licensed architects, or as part of multidisciplinary teams.

Originally founded in 1968 and re-established in 2025, ATANS strengthens the recognition, visibility, and advancement of architectural technology as a profession rooted in technical design, building science, and practical application.

ATANS supports and aligns with key national and provincial organizations that set the foundation for certification and program quality, including:

Technology Accreditation Canada (TAC) – accrediting college and institute programs in architectural technology
Technology Professionals Canada (TPC) – supporting national certification standards for applied science professionals

Membership grants ATANS designation: Additionally

certified Architectural Technologist for qualified members. Student associates may not use designations.
A formal recognition issued to individuals who meet the education, experience, and ethical standards of the association.

These credential affirms a technologist’s and technicians technical competence, professionalism, and contribution to Nova Scotia’s built environment.

ATANS recognizes and celebrates the diverse skill set that technologists and technicians bring to the building industry.

Our Purpose

ATANS is committed to strengthening and supporting the architectural technology profession through:

Technical Excellence – Promoting high standards in construction documentation, design development, and applied building science
Ethical Practice – Upholding a voluntary Code of Conduct for integrity and accountability
Career Advancement – Guiding students, interns, and practicing professionals through education, mentorship, and certification pathways
Professional Recognition – Assessing applicants for the certified designation to ensure alignment with provincial and national standards
Public Advocacy – Increasing awareness of the vital role of architectural technologists in the design and construction ecosystem

In Practice

Architectural Technologists contribute across all phases of building projects, including:

Preparing construction drawings, specifications, and permit applications
Conducting building code reviews, zoning analysis, and technical detailing
Coordinating with architects, engineers, consultants, and contractors
Practicing independently on Part 9 buildings, in accordance with the Nova Scotia Building Code
Supporting architectural and engineering firms on complex residential, commercial, and institutional projects

Our Role in the Profession

ATANS plays an important role in professional advocacy, recognition, and support by:

Evaluating and accrediting members
Promoting alignment with recognized education standards such as TAC-accredited programs
Encouraging formal certification standards
Supporting professional development, continuing education, and lifelong learning
Advocating for the inclusion and advancement of technologists in regulatory discussions, procurement, education, and design leadership

Incorporated under the Societies Act of Nova Scotia, ATANS serves as a central hub for Nova Scotia’s architectural technology community—building pathways, raising standards, and championing the profession.
